Our Planet Needs You – Year 6’s Shop Sustainable and Upcycling Workshop

Year 6 took place in another 2 wonderful workshops organized by Our Planet Needs You. The first was a Swap Shop run by the children themselves. Caty Keen (founder of OPNY) encouraged our year 6 students to bring in as many pre loved clothes as possible. They brought in over 15 bags of clothing. Well done Year 6!

Once brought in, the children set up their own Swap Shop stall with handmade signs. They were all given a token for the clothes they brought it which they then used as ‘payment’ to select a new pre-loved item for themselves or a family member. The remaining clothes were donated to TRAID

While one class was sorting and selecting their clothing from the Swap Shop, the other was taking part in OPNY’s second workshop which focused on the upcycling aspect of shopping sustainably. We were grateful to have Marisol, a local seamstress and dressmaker who specializes in making new items of clothing using recycled materials, to help us. Marisol kindly brought all of the materials for the children to design, stuff and sew their own pocket cushion keyring. Year 6 had a great time with both workshops. Thank you, Caty and Marisol!
