After a few delays, the Wormholt Wanderers finally had their final league match of the season against Kenmont Primary School and it was an electric afternoon of grassroots football!
Girls Match: 2-2 (Draw)
The girls had one of their best games ever! They were pitted against a team of Kenmont Girls who towered over our girls and their Number 10 was Messi-like but that did not dishearten our girls!. We had multiple shots on goal. One nail-biting opportunity came near the end of the first half where Aisha laced a shot from outside the penalty box and rattled the near post and the teeth of everyone there! We had a trickled in goal from Evie In the first half followed by a Kenmont equalizer just before the end of the first half. The girls were hungry for the win. Wormholt girls started the second half strong with a deflected goal from Aisha! We were 2-1 up for the first time this season and on our way to our first win of the season but tired legs got the better of us and their Number 10 managed to weave her way through our defense and put away a goal for the draw. The girls fought hard all year and maintained many draws! They finished respectably in the middle of the table (official position still TBC) but we, at Wormholt Park School, are so proud of our girls! Hopefully we’ll get our first win next year
Boys Match: 2-0 (Win)
Buckle in Parents of WPS because this match was a rollercoaster. After watching the girls almost win their game, the boys fired up and ready to take it the match to Kenmont! The match refereed by different coaches than usually so a few new rules were implemented, primarily a new rule that the boys could no longer score from inside the penalty box. This is lead to the painful stripping of a goal by Admir that was scored after a beautiful symphony of passes that felt almost orchestral. Undeterred by this, the boys piled on the pressure with an attacking formation that Pep Guardiola would be proud of and found themselves 1-0 up at the end of the first half with a stunning finish from K’Shon. The second half was a tense, with Kenmont kicking the match up another gear but our defense held strong, The brick wall of Sultan and Illyas supported by Max showed no signs of buckling. This got shaky when Harry, our GK, went down near the halfway mark of the second half and we were worried we would lose our clean sheet but thankfully he soldiered on. Late in the second half, Abed managed to slot a well placed shot that finished the game 2-0. This final victory for the boys means that the Wormholt Park Boys finish top of the table and advance to the Semi Finals of Mayors Cup Tournament!
Our Man of the Match goes to Sultan for being the literally embodiment of the Great Wall of China – Nothing was getting past him!
Our Woman of the Match goes Aisha for chasing down every single shot, deflection and loose ball – what a engine!
