Maths

“Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about understanding” – William Paul Thurston

At Wormholt Park, we believe that maths is a vital skill that can be applied universally no matter where life’s journey takes you. We have designed a curriculum with the intent that it is accessible to all and which maximises the development of every child’s ability and academic achievement. Throughout their school journey, our intent is to deepen children’s understanding of mathematical concepts by building on their prior learning and individual understanding. This is achieved through making rich connections across these ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems.

It is vitally important that children feel and see numbers in different ways. Therefore, we use a variety of concrete and pictorial resources to aid conceptual understanding before progressing to abstract concepts. We believe it is important for children to be able not only to solve mathematical problems but also to be able to explain the reasoning behind their lines of enquiry using accurate mathematical vocabulary.

At Wormholt Park, we have a desire for children to demonstrate a commitment and enthusiasm for the subject. We create an environment where children can embrace the value of resilience and learning from mistakes. We promote the ability to show initiative in solving problems in a wide range of contexts that elicit high quality discussion developing children’s logic. These characteristics are all embedded in the teaching of mathematics at Wormholt Park.
